Performance Marketing = Payment for Results
Performance marketing is a new segment of Internet marketing. It is a beneficial business model for Website publishers and their merchant partners, whether they are through affiliate networks or a direct relationship. In this business model, the publisher drives traffic to their merchant partners' Websites and are paid only for completed transactions, which can include leads, referrals or sales.
There are 3 main Models for Performance Marketing:
- CPC (Cost per Click) or PPC (Pay per Click) – Advertisers pay only when their ad is clicked. There are 2 primary models:
- Flat Rate PPC – The advertiser and publisher agree upon a fixed amount that will be paid for each click
- Bid Based PPC - The advertiser signs a contract that allows competing against other advertisers in a private auction hosted by a publisher or, more commonly, an advertising network.
- CPL (Cost Per Lead) - Lead generation (also known as lead-gen) requires that the consumer fill out a form. The length and complexity of the form often determine the amount that is paid for the lead.
- CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) – pay only for customer acquisitions. Commission rates are often determined by the advertiser based on the actual or estimated lifetime value for the customer.
